Boxing and wrapping

Packing Services in Augusta, GA

Augusta Georgia Movers packs households and workplaces around Augusta, either every room or just the ones you dread opening. Cartons, wrapping paper, and specialty boxes are part of the picture, each carton is marked for the room it belongs in, and unpacking at the destination can be added if you want it. Say which rooms you'd like handled and when the move is.

Choose how much of the work to pass along

People often assume it's all or nothing, yet packing help comes in four forms, and blending them is entirely normal. Here is how each works:

Everything.

All rooms, all cupboards, all drawers. You set aside only what you need for the final night and the first morning; the rest is dealt with.

Select rooms.

The spaces you can't face. Usually that means the kitchen first, then the garage, the china cabinet, and the home office, with the remainder done on your own schedule.

Breakables only.

China, crystal, glassware, mirrors, framed pictures, televisions, instruments, and collectibles get wrapped carefully while you deal with clothing, books, and linens, the simple stuff.

Unboxing.

The step hardly anyone books and nearly everyone later wishes they had. More follows below.

Even if you plan to do the packing yourself, ask about cartons and supplies alone. The correct box for each item solves most of the problem, and it's what people improvise worst.

Schedule

Boxing precedes truck day

Build your schedule on this: a full pack happens ahead of the move, normally one day earlier, or two to three days for a large house. The truck then arrives at a home already boxed. The local moving and residential moving pages describe how the day of the move itself runs.

This reshapes your final days. Beds, the kettle, the shower items, and pet supplies are boxed last, or on the morning itself. Whatever you're still using stays out, then gets its own carton at the end. Sorting must also happen before packers arrive rather than while they work, because packers box whatever sits in front of them, such as a drawer of dead batteries or clothes you've already decided to donate.

Name the rooms you'd like done, plus your moving date.

Technique

What careful packing looks like

Most breakage traces back to technique rather than bad luck. A properly packed carton differs in these ways:

Dishes stand on edge, the way records sit

Never laid in a flat pile. Stacked plates push their whole weight through the center of the lowest one, which is where it breaks.

Clean paper, never newsprint.

Ink from newsprint smears onto china, glass, and anything painted, and getting it off is a chore.

Each box packed full to the lid, with no empty space.

A box with a hollow collapses once weight lands on top, whereas a tightly packed one holds up. Tip a sealed carton and nothing should shift inside.

Dense items go in small boxes, bulky light ones in large.

Fill a large carton with books and the bottom seam gives out, typically when someone is lugging it down the stairs.

Bottom seams taped across the middle and along both sides

One lone strip of tape won't do.

Wine glasses upright in dividers

Every glass gets a compartment to itself, so nothing touches.

Shades boxed separately

Nested together and kept apart from bases or anything heavy that could press down. Crushed shades are the commonest avoidable casualty of a household move.

Telescoping cartons for mirrors, framed art, and glass tops

Handled and loaded on edge.

Each carton labeled with its destination room, its top side, and a rough idea of the contents

Plus a written list of whatever's been sealed.

Good to know

What stays unpacked

Flammable, corrosive, or pressurized items.

Gasoline, propane, paint thinner and solvents, spray cans, pool and lawn chemicals, ammunition, and fireworks don't belong in a box or on a truck. Use them up, dispose of them properly, or take them with you yourself before moving day.

Fresh and opened food

That's why the refrigerator and pantry get sorted, not packed.

Papers, medicines, jewelry, keys, laptops, external drives, one-of-a-kind items

Those stay with you; leaving them alone is standard practice instead of leaving it to a packer's judgment.

Pets and greenery

Neither belongs in a carton. Each needs its own plan, usually your car or a professional who transports animals and houseplants.

Whatever you'd rather keep to yourself.

Say so, gather those items in one room, close the door.

Pick which rooms are yours and which the packers do.

The finishing job

Why unpacking is the step people skip

Booking the pack but skipping the unpack is the classic false economy. Boxing happens against a deadline, while unboxing drags on for months. Open cartons early: Georgia says written damage claims go to a mover within 90 days of delivery.

Unpacking opens the cartons room by room, sets items on surfaces or straight into the cupboards you've chosen and, most valuable of all, should carry away the packing material. A house move leaves a heap of flattened cardboard and used paper that is hard to dispose of, so having it hauled off is worth more than most people expect, and worth confirming in advance.

As with packing, you can scale it: unpack the entire house, or just enough to get a working kitchen and made beds by the first night.

Declutter beforehand

Every object you own is about to be wrapped, boxed, lifted, and unwrapped, including things you'd have discarded anyway. Choosing what stays behind is the most productive afternoon of the whole project, and for a long-distance move, where weight drives the outcome, it matters even more still. It has to happen first, because once a carton is sealed, no one reopens it to reconsider.

Cost drivers

What drives the cost

Room count, the amount of fragile contents, and how much specialty material is needed (dish packs, wardrobe cartons, mirror boxes, custom crates for art or stone) all play in, as do whether unpacking is added and how much sorting remains undone when packers arrive.

A separate question has nothing to do with money: who sealed a carton affects who is responsible when something inside arrives broken. The Georgia Department of Public Safety moving guide says movers generally aren't liable for items you pack yourself unless they were negligent. Ask how that works before you split up the rooms, especially for china and art.

FAQ

Quick answers

Are boxes and supplies included?

Cartons, clean paper, tape, and any specialty boxes the job calls for are normally part of a packing booking. Confirm exactly what's covered when you book, since it varies between providers, and asking beats assuming.

May I pack a few rooms myself and hand off the rest?

Most bookings look like this. Tell the packers which rooms are yours, and label your own boxes clearly so nothing is packed twice or skipped altogether.

Do I have to be home during packing?

Yes, at least at the start and finish. Questions come up about what's staying, what rides in your car, and which cabinet is off limits, and they're easier settled face to face. Also ask for an inventory before loading and follow along as it's written up.

Where do the empty cartons go afterward?

If unpacking is part of your booking, ask whether the cartons leave with the crew. If you're unpacking alone, arrange disposal in advance, since a whole house of flattened boxes exceeds what regular curbside pickup usually handles.

Want to hand off the boxing?

Send the rooms you want packed, the bedroom count, your moving date, and whether unpacking at the other end is wanted. For an office or shop move, commercial moving explains how the work is usually divided between your own staff and the crew, room by room.
