Typical jobs

Jobs on the list

See which of these is yours:

An entire house or condo

All rooms, along with the garage, attic, basement and shed.

An apartment unit

Buildings with shared entrances, elevators and stairwells too; the apartment moving page goes into more depth.

One room only

A bedroom bound for a dorm, a study, a nursery.

A small shop or office

Desks, files, shelving and IT gear, often moved after closing.

To or from storage

At the start, the finish, or both.

A single heavy piece

A couch, gun safe, treadmill or armoire alone is closer to a furniture move than a house move.

Rearranging at home

Two rooms emptied and then refilled once new flooring goes in.

A job that crosses into North Augusta, SC, counts as long-distance moving, which is quoted and scheduled differently.

Handling

Steps that head off damage

Nearly all moving damage traces back to a handful of avoidable errors. Each is dealt with as follows:

Floors, door frames and handrails are covered before carrying begins.

Carpet runners go down, jambs get padding, and stair rails are wrapped. In most moves, the building takes more of a beating than the furniture does.

Upholstered pieces are pad-wrapped, not simply stacked.

First blankets, then fastening, then loading, since sofa arms and corners are what get scuffed.

Flat-pack stays in one piece wherever the doorways permit.

Particleboard seldom survives being taken apart twice, since cam locks and dowel holes wear out on the first go and a wardrobe stripped to panels often never sits square again.

Glass and stone tops are carried on edge, in a rack.

Stone has hardly any strength across its face, so a slab carried flat may crack under its own weight at the first bump.

Sleeper sofas have their mechanisms strapped before tilting.

Left loose, the mechanism opens in the doorway and catches the frame, the trim, or a mover's shin on the way.

Large furniture is measured at the bottom, not stuck halfway up the stairs.

What fits the room may still jam at the landing, and it is far easier to learn that on the ground floor.

Mattresses get covers.

Dragging an uncovered mattress along a stairwell wall or setting it on a driveway leaves stains that never lift.

Washers get transit bolts back.

The drum rides on springs, and without the bolts it hammers the cabinet all the way there. Water lines, the drain hose and the refrigerator ice-maker tube are disconnected and emptied first, so nothing leaks onto the rest of the load.

TVs stand upright in a fitted carton.

Panels are not laid flat with anything on top.

On arrival, cartons are placed by the room written on them, and bed frames and tables are reassembled before the movers go.

Cost

What affects cost

Matching furniture in two homes can still mean very different jobs, and sheer quantity is seldom the reason. The main factors:

Access at each end. Think of the walk between the front door and wherever the truck can really stop. Flights of stairs, a long carry to the curb, a tight lane, a soft or sloping drive, a gate narrower than the truck, cars parked bumper to bumper on the street: every trip out of the house pays that price again, and a full home means dozens of trips.

How much comes apart. Beds, tables, shelves and any piece too big to pass a doorway fully built.

Your share of the packing. A move with cartons already sealed and labeled is a different job from one where a whole kitchen still needs wrapping.

The calendar. Everyone moves around month-end and in the summer, and those dates get booked up first.

A sound quote starts with someone seeing what is being moved, either on a walkthrough or over video. Treat any figure offered by phone from a person who has not looked as shaky; it is the one most likely to shift on the day.

First contact

What to have on hand before contacting

Nothing fancy, only:

Both addresses, plus the floor of each

Your date and how flexible it is

Approximate size of the load; bedroom count often suffices

Anything large, delicate or awkward: a piano, safe, pool table, big aquarium or marble tabletop

Whether you'll pack on your own or want packing services taken care of

That gives enough to size it up.

Good to know

When a full move is more than you need

Saying so plainly can keep money in your pocket:

A ground-floor studio or one-bedroom, nothing to take apart, and a truck or container already parked at your place?

Loading and unloading help fits that size of job: you keep the truck, and someone packs it so the load stays steady on the road.

A handful of boxes only?

That is not really a moving job, and calling it one helps nobody.

A few things cannot go on the truck.

Fireworks, ammunition, aerosols, gasoline, propane, paint thinner and pool chemicals cannot ride on a moving truck. Mowers, generators and trimmers go only after their tanks are emptied and plugs removed.

Appliances on gas or hardwired power

A qualified tradesperson should disconnect and reconnect these. Movers carry the appliance itself and leave the gas line and wiring alone.

Keep valuables with you.

Documents and valuables stay with you. Paperwork, medicine, jewelry, keys, laptops and keepsakes ride in your own car, as do pets and, on longer trips, houseplants.

Preparing for the day itself

Close and tape every carton, then mark it with the room it is going to. Keep book boxes small, because a large one is dangerous to lift. Clear drawers of liquids and breakables, run the freezer down a day early, and save a space at the curb for the truck. Pets and children are best kept behind one shut door while the heavy carrying goes on, and have the keys and gate codes handy.

Augusta and Richmond County merged governments in 1996. Jobs run across the main Augusta area, from Country Club Hills to North Augusta, Belvedere and Beech Island.

FAQ

Quick answers

How soon should I reserve?

Once the date is firm. Month-end weeks and the summer months fill soonest, so when your date falls inside one, start the conversation early, even before you have bought a single box or settled every detail, because the calendar fills before the packing does.

What if something breaks in the move?

Before agreeing to anything, ask each mover what protection covers your shipment and what it is based on. Answers vary more than people expect, and plain answers are a good sign. You can also check a company against the list kept by the Georgia Department of Public Safety, which certifies in-state household goods movers.

Must I be present that day?

Yes, or send someone you trust who can make decisions for you. Questions pop up the whole time: what goes in last, where a piece belongs, what stays behind. Answers are quicker when the owner is standing there.

Can pianos, safes or pool tables be moved?

Mention them beforehand, not on moving day. They call for particular equipment and enough hands, and a pool table must be dismantled and re-leveled at the other end. Planned ahead, it is all manageable; nobody wants to sort it out at 8am.
